Blues, Brews and Birds

Champy’s is hidden so to speak over on the well-traveled section of Second St. between Muscle Shoals and Sheffield.  It’s located in the building that formerly housed Campbell’s Restaurant.  The main part of the restaurant is fairly spacious and contains several regular 4-person tables, a couple of 4 person high top tables and a single booth next to the Elvis memorial.  There is also a bar where patrons can just have a cold one or a meal.  In addition, there is a covered side patio for al fresco (that’s city slicker speak for outside) dining.  During this year’s Handy Festival, several musicians entertained customers on the patio.

They have a simply menu that consists mainly of their signature dish; Fried Chicken.  Not just any fried chicken, but honest to goodness fried chicken that old time preachers would line up at the door for.  All of their food is prepared fresh and arrives at the table piping hot.  In addition to the chicken they also have hot tamales wrapped in real corn shucks.  Also on the menu there are various salads with fried, buffalo fried or Cajun grilled chicken toppings on them.

For starters be sure to give the Fried Jalapeno peppers a try, but beware they do have a little kick to them, both coming and going if you get my drift.

Champy’s offers soft drinks from Pepsi, sweet and un-sweet tea.  They have an adequate selection of beers on draft and bottle beers.

Food prices are in the $6 – $10 range and they accept all major credit cards.  Seating is on a first come, first serve basis.

We have made two visits to Champy’s and have tried both the fried chicken and the tamales.  Both were delicious and we highly recommend them.  I can foresee being a regular at Champy’s, you should be too!
